The Pop Up Book
It was mid summer, and soon I was going to go hang out with my girlfriend, Hannah. Usually I draw her a random cartoonish picture, featuring strange randomness and angry cats. I decided she was probably getting bored of receiving pictures, so I decided I should do something else.. something cool she would like. I pondered this for a while, and during a bike ride the idea struck my brain, a pop up book!
The next day, I set to work.

I started with 2 thick pieces of white paper, scissors, a pencil, a few old magazines, and sat down at the art table. One of the thick papers was made into a box, by using a ruler, scissors, and the pencil, to cut out a 20 inches in length and 5 inches tall. I folded the paper into 5 inch long sides, and taped the end together, making a box!

I folded the second paper in half. I put the box in the center of the second paper so that the corners were touching the crease in the paper. Then I taped down the two opposite corners not touching the crease.

Amazing folding action!

I used an exacto knife to cut some holes in the box, which will be behind a sign, which supposedly will illuminate the sign once I put lights in later.

Yes it's a motel.

I used the exacto knife to cut some doors and windows, and taped strange pictures behind them.

Strange pictures.

Cat food.
I typed a story on my typewriter, since it is a "book", and taped it on.

All done with the book, time for some lights!

I built a small light with a switch, some LEDs, and generic battery pack, all from Radio Shack.

I taped the battery pack to the back, and ran the wires through the book into the house. (On the back are fake reviews of the book by the New York Times.)

Tada!
And in the dark.
